There are the times when we’re in a room together, dressed to the nines for no one but one another. But there’s also a lot of joy in being a Black woman, too, and I strongly believe there aren’t enough stories out there that reflect that.Īs a Black woman, there are some things you can only experience around other Black women. This is not to say that I don't experience the challenges of being a Black woman in America I do every single day. There are lots of cupcakes throughout the book and a meal at a taqueria that is described in great detail.There’s also a lot of joy in being a Black woman, too.Įven as a kid, solely seeing negative portrayals of Black girlhood and womanhood have never rung true to me. Word of warning: do not read this book on an empty stomach. There were a few aspects of the story I thought the author would have fleshed out a little more but it was still a fun read. It was nice to see the non-Hollywood side of Los Angeles as well as characters that aren’t white supermodels working to get their next big break. Nikole and Carlos are both really likeable characters with great friends and families but awful tastes in their previous partners. Of course they see each other again! Neither is looking for a real relationship but what you’re looking for and what you get aren’t always the same thing. The three meet some of Nikole’s friends in a nearby bar to rehash the disaster and Nikole and Carlos don’t think they will ever see each other again. When they see the camera crews coming to interview Nikole, Carlos and his sister spring into action pulling the “Wow I haven’t seen you in forever!” ploy to cut off the cameras and hustle Nikole out of the stadium.

Both are horrified by the jerk (they actually heard a little of what went down) and sympathetic to the poor woman who was humiliated by the public proposal.

But as he and his buddies storm out Nikole tries to remain calm and act natural and sits back in her seat.Ĭarlos and his sister are only a few rows back from Nikole when this happens. Needless to say the bystanders are shocked and not exactly pleased that she turned this very attractive man down. Shock and anger are all she feels with every eye in the stadium (and as she later discovers all the viewers at home and later on the internet) as she politely (as she can manage) declines. ESPECIALLY when he spells her name wrong. Especially when her potential fiance, man-bun and fellow male model/actors in tow, decides to make this gesture after only a few months of dating with absolutely no indication it was coming.

I’m sure some women dream of a proposal up in the bright lights of the scoreboard at a Dodgers game.
